UNITS OF STUDY IN EARTH SCIENCE

The progression of topics studied in Earth Science follows the progression from hands on, or more concrete, concepts to the more abstract.  At the beginning of the year, we study Maps, Minerals and Rocks.

Next, we zoom out to the wider picture of how the Earth is formed and reformed by looking at plate tectonics or Earth's Dynamic Crust and then Weather, Erosion, and Landscape Development.

Our attention turns to the evidence of what the Earth was like in its distance past with the study of Earth's History.  From this point we turn to the changes that are visible, daily, all around us, Meteorology.  This topic is studied during a time of year when we see the most change in the atmosphere.  It is possible to experience a Nor'easter and see the effects of Tornados during this time of year.  We then look at the changes of weather over time, Climate.

Near the end of the course, we turn our attention to Astronomy.  Astronomy can be very abstract, or difficult to comprehend.  It is enhanced in the Spring because we are able to make direct observations more easily with the warmer weather outside.

Our last topic is Environmental Awareness.  Environmental Awareness is the best way to wrap up a course in Earth Science.  You will develop a sense that we are stewards of the Earth and leave the course with a better understanding of your role in maintaining our planet, Earth.
