Dessert Review Carnival
(a.k.a. Edible Earth Science Review)

In 2002, my students proposed doing a review activity that involved eating desserts. I put them to work on the idea and out of their creative minds came the EarthScienceIsCool.net Dessert Review Carnival!  Since then, I have shared this idea with many colleagues who have found this idea to be extremely motivating.

So, what is Earth Science Dessert Review Carnival?  Students focus on one topic that they learned and create a dessert model, like cake, cookies, candy, or even savory foods that represents a diagram or model used during the year.  The students then write a minimum of 10 questions about that topic and the model to aid in reviewing the topic.  All of the students then set up shop in groups of two.  One student stays at the station while the other student goes to other stations to answer questions AND to win a treat.  This is the good part.  Students use the main model as a reviewing tool.  But, the students must also provide a 'prize-treat' if students get a minimum of 7 out 10 questions correct.  Once the parading student has gone to all of the other stations, they switch roles.  The activity takes about 60 -80 minutes. and the focus is on food that can keep on the counter for a day or so, like cake, cookies, cande, chips, etc.

To the left are pictures from the group who most recently did this review.  I have done this activity every year since 2002 and other teachers in my district have utilized the idea as well.  Bon Apetit!
