HONORS DESIGNATION Students enrolled in Regents Earth Science may earn an additional Honors Designation on their high school transcript if they complete additional required work outside of class. These activities are to be completed outside of class and by the student. Students are encouraged to discuss their projects with me, however the work is to be conducted solely by the students. There are two avenues to achieve this designation: A Long-term Project (Honors Experience) or 5 Projects (Honors Challenges).
Honors Experiences are long-term in nature and will focus on ‘Extreme weather events and Climate Change.’ Students may work together with one other student on the Honors Experience. There are due dates throughout the year that serve as check points for project progress.
The Honors Experience choice must be made by Friday in October 30th, 2009. The Honors Experience must be completed by April 30th or sooner. Science Fair Entry's must complete their project following Honors' Experience Guidlines and Guidelines set by the Champlain Valley Science Fair's Guildelines.
Honors Challenges focus on key topics in Earth Science that reinforce concepts taught in Earth Science class. There are a total of 5 due over the course of the year. A minimum of one must be completed per quarter, but two must be completed in at least one quarter to meet the required five projects for the year. If the minimum of 1 project is not met per quarter, students will not be allowed to continue the challenges. One Honors Challenge must be completed 1 week before the end of each quarter and two in one quarter so that a total of five are completed over the course of the school year.
Students who drop lower than passing in the course or do not meet the required deadlines are automatically dropped from the Honors Designation. There are rubrics for successfully completing the Honors Projects, but these are not averaged into the Earth Science Course. The student simply receives an ‘H’ on their transcript for having successfully completed the Honors requirements for the course.
